Introduction

There is no substitute for the bookends of discipline and diligence, especially as it regards an artistic career.

My ambition to be a full-time writer began when I was a child. You can read about my journey as a screenwriter and author here, here and here. Suffice to say, my goal to write for a living was not a want but a need.

Translation: Giving up was never an option.

I’ve now been a full-time writer for over 20 years, having leapt off the proverbial cliff with no net upon quitting my 100th day job. I was newly married and had to quickly learn to hustle.

What follows are lessons derived from a real world education riddled with mistakes and failures, and quite welcome success stories.

If I had neither leaned into nor listened to those collective lessons, failure to launch would have become inevitable.
