Boy George and the Last Best Day

Three months and one day prior to my wife’s unexpected passing, we attended our final concert together. It was a special night.

The next day was our 22nd anniversary.

We celebrated early.

We would not make it to our 23rd as my beloved wife unexpectedly passed away three months and one day later.

Our early 22nd, though, was one hell of a time.

It was, in fact, our last best day.

Lorie and I used to “create our own fun,” a signature Eisenberg effort that led to us having a blast even when there was nothing much going on. This is why in the myriad photos I post of my late wife on Medium, she is always smiling.

Actually, in fairness, she took over social director responsibilities of the household. By so doing, she kept our marriage fresh and eventful.

I happily give her that credit and I will always be grateful.

If there were no events happening on a given day, we’d go on a road trip and sample the local flair. Or, we’d hit a movie or go out with friends. Or… maybe we’d order in and watch a movie on Netflix, play a board game or just talk.

And then, if I was lucky…

However, if there were events, we’d either attend our regular go-to’s — a new play, a classical music concert, a film or book industry festival or party, a special museum exhibit — or we’d attend something different and quirky such as a Bollywood dance class or the final concert of the then-surviving members of The Monkees (Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith; Nesmith has since passed away).

Also in that latter regard, Boy George and Culture Club was in the midst of a national tour and returning to Los Angeles for a two-night-only concert. The band was playing the next night also, on our formal 22nd anniversary date, but attending the first evening was more favorable to us for a number of reasons.

Either way, this one was a no-brainer. A 1980’s retro evening was in the offing.

And, as advertised, Boy George and Culture Club wasn’t coming alone.
