Mike Pence Slaps The Faces of Decedents, and Everyone Who Lost Friends or Family to Covid-19
A picture speaks a thousand words.
Sorry to again dig up that old chestnut but when truth refers to power, particularly, and the matter at hand is egregious, the subject of the affront deserves harsh scrutiny.
On April 28, 2020, during a visit to the Mayo Clinic, the Vice President of the United States delivered a hearty face slap to everyone fighting Covid-19, and every healthcare hero working diligently to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
“As Vice President of the United States,” Mike Pence said, “I’m tested for the coronavirus on a regular basis, and everyone who is around me is tested for the coronavirus. When the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) issued guidelines about wearing a mask, it was their recognition that people that may have the coronavirus could prevent the possibility of conveying the virus to someone else by wearing a mask. And since I don’t have the coronavirus I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to be here to be able to speak to these researchers, these incredible health-care personnel and look them in the eye and say, ‘Thank you.’”
No. He said, “Fuck you.”
Pence leads the coronavirus task force. He should be setting the example.
Donald Trump also refuses to don the mask.
Perhaps Pence did not want to appear weak in front of his boss?
To be clear, the CDC recommendation is just that: Medical personnel is strongly advised to wear masks; they are not required. The Mayo Clinic, however, has issued the wearing of masks as required policy.
A spokesman for the Mayo Clinic said this in an email:
“Mayo shared the masking policy with the VP’s office.”
Simple. What then was the problem?
Mike Pence wore a nice suit. Well-fitted. It appears he works out some too and surely the cameras would pick up on that. He is a self-described “man of God,” who refuses to be in the same room, by himself, with a woman other than his wife. A man of conviction, he is.
Surely, he would stand out in a photo-opp if he confidently trusted God to protect him.
But nearly 60,000 U.S. citizens are now dead as a result of this virus, and over 1,000,000 infected. Thousands are still dying by the day.
What about them?
On the same day when the Washington Post broke the news that Donald Trump ignored multiple intelligence warnings that Covid-19 was indeed an imminent threat, Mike Pence looked stern and pensive in every Mayo Clinic photo.
In response to substantial outrage, a Mayo Clinic representative posted the following on Twitter:
The tweet was deleted within the hour, in favor of this one:
Indeed, many cheered the VP doing his job and setting to enter the hospital. Many of them, per a perusal of social media comments, were then also stunned that he did not wear a mask upon walking through the doors.
Mike Pence may be well-meaning. He may carry himself as a “man of God” and truly believe it. But Covid-19 testing does not mean one is in the clear. Following a test, one can still develop the virus.
He may be the Vice President of the United States. But he is not a very smart, or prudent, man.
So, to that end … Mr. Vice President, fuck you too.
