Monogamy: The Natural State of Affairs or a Choice?
My late wife and I were monogamous throughout our marriage. We also surprised one another with an answer to the above question.
My late wife and I remained happily monogamous throughout the entirety of our 22-year marriage while most of our close friends during that time period filed for divorce.
The main reason expressed by the parties for the failure of those marriages: one partner or another admitted to cheating.
Invariably, whenever we received such news we would engage in a conversation questioning whether monogamy was indeed a natural state of affairs.
Despite what became oft-repeated conversations, our views on the matter remained consistent: Monogamy was indeed not natural; it was a choice.
The first time Lorie and I had that conversation, we both felt a bit threatened by our honest responses.
We trusted one another — that was never an issue — but we were nonetheless surprised.
And so, during the first admission, we asked each other another question that we promised never to ask again: “If monogamy is a choice, can we promise each other to never take another option?”
