I lost my dad nearly 14 years ago. He and my mom were together, happily, for nearly 50 years.

Once upon a time they had planned to visit Oahu for a second honeymoon of sorts, a long-held dream trip for them both, though life got in the way and they never made it.

Last November 26, following complications of a hemorrhagic stroke suffered six days prior, I lost my beloved wife, Lorie. My then-82-year-old mom had flown out to California from her home in Florida to visit us, and my middle brother with his family, for Thanksgiving.

Neither my brother nor I told my mom about Lorie until after she arrived. Neither my brother nor I wanted her to worry during the five hour-plus flight.

When Lorie passed, my mom stayed with me for several weeks and cooked meal after meal, stocking my refrigerator and freezer both.
