November 20, 2023: The Funeral of My Wife, Lorie Girsh-Eisenberg
I arrived at the funeral home one hour before guests were called, armed with the determination to successfully see through a last-minute request and a boatload of hours-long welling tears ready to deploy at any moment.
The tears would come naturally, but the fight in me proved unnecessary as my request was acceded to with no dramatics.
Said request was about piping in a particular song as guests entered the chapel. I asked about running that song on a continuous loop.
A day worker at the funeral home who worked on these matters did, though, counter with a request he believed would be better: “How about we run the song once every 10 minutes or so between classical music pieces? This way, there’s more variety.”
“I appreciate it but I’d rather you just run the song I’m asking for on a continuous loop,” was my response.
“Not a problem,” he replied.
The song I requested was a most special song for Lorie and I. It was, in fact, our wedding song. It was loaded with meaning and resonance for us both.
