The Great Debacle, Part One: The First Trump-Biden Debate
The first Trump-Biden debate was a disaster for the ages. But did Biden make an impression, despite Trump’s abuse?
The debate was an abject disaster for all the expected reasons.
Trump acted every bit the bully and Biden came across as a fundamentally decent man blown off his game.
The former Vice-President was abused, pure and simple. But politics can be an abusive business. This, however, was over and above.
If anyone publicly slammed your family like Trump did to Beau and Hunter, ask yourself if you could have held back so gracefully.
Would Biden be an effective President in the quagmire?
The answer to that question cannot be answered based on this shout-fest. Base the answer on the career, not the debacle.
Through it all, Biden had somehow managed to get across some valuable points. And he was still standing at the end.
To a Trumpian point in return, for example, a response about asking white supremacists to stand down?
“Proud Boys,” Trump said. “Stand down … but stand by.”
Score for Biden, who implored the President to advise white terrorist groups to do the former … but Trump could not let it end there.
As a criticism of Biden, he needs to cut the constant smiling when he gets frustrated and show a tougher exterior the next time out to convince those on the fence to be at peace with a decision.
I get the age argument, but Biden is fine. He’s highly capable and he’ll have a solid team at his side, beginning with Kamala. He needs to rethink his game plan for the next debates and forcefully express his bonafides.
And the damn moderators do need to cut mics as necessary.
It’s time to bring back decency.
